On July 15, 2024, BEHEMOTH’s performance at Slagthuset in Malmö, Sweden featured the Polish extreme metallers’ new touring drummer, Jon Rice. This concert marked a significant moment for fans as Rice, known for his work with Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, stepped in for longtime drummer Inferno (Zbigniew Robert Promiński), who is unable to play because of health issues.

The decision to bring Jon Rice on board was announced by BEHEMOTH frontman Adam “Nergal” Darski on July 9, following a video shared from the band’s production rehearsals. Nergal expressed regret over Inferno’s absence but assured fans that Rice would deliver powerful performances in his stead. This decision reflects BEHEMOTH’s commitment to maintaining their intense live shows, ensuring that their European summer tour proceeds with the same level of energy and professionalism.

Rice’s history with BEHEMOTH is not entirely new; he previously filled in for Inferno during their 2022 South American tour with Arch Enemy and the 2017 North American tour with Slayer. His extensive experience and ability to adapt quickly make him a suitable choice for the rigorous demands of BEHEMOTH’s performances. You can see his insanely controlled double-bass technique here.

During the Malmö show, fans witnessed a set that included BEHEMOTH’s signature dark and powerful tracks, supported by Rice’s relentless drumming. The band’s performance was part of their “O Father, O Satan, O Svmmmer” 2024 European tour, described as a “monstrous voyage” through the continent, featuring huge outdoor festival stages and select club shows. The tour also includes special guests like Testament, Gaerea, Pestilence, and Uada on various dates, promising a treat for European metal fans.

This lineup adjustment is part of BEHEMOTH’s broader plan, as Nergal mentioned in a recent interview. The band is focusing heavily on their activities in 2024, with upcoming projects and new music on the horizon. BEHEMOTH’s ability to adapt and continue delivering high-caliber performances despite lineup changes underscores their resilience and dedication to their art.
