America has been the source of some amazing drummers over the past several decades. Let’s take a look through some of the top American drummers that are killing the game right now, and a couple that shaped the sound of music as well.

Questlove
Philadelphia born Questlove of The Roots has defined what it means to play with some “groove.” Nowadays, he’s expanded his professional career into media, television, podcasting, and more. However, his roots still remain in music. He is still producing and drumming for The Roots, along with backing Jimmy Fallon on The Late Show since 2009.
Dave Grohl
The legendary Nirvana drummer, Dave Grohl, has never been more active. Whether you think Nirvana killed rock music, or you love them for their unique sound, you can’t deny they contributed to the new wave of American music in a way very few bands ever have. After shaping the Seattle grunge music scene, we all know Grohl has gone on to start the Foo Fighters. Lately though, he’s been lighting up the music scene, sharing the stage with the likes of Paul McCartney. It’s interesting to see such an influential, American drummer become a vocalist and songwriter in addition to keeping their drum chops polished over the years. Read his book here and dig through the Nirvana drumming memories.
Steve Jordan
Steve Jordan was born in New York, and 67 years later, he still has one of the tightest, in-the-pocket drumming styles of any drummer in the world. He’s played on the classic 1986’s Dirty Work by The Rolling Stones, explored the blues in John Mayer’s Trio group, played with Eric Clapton, and now he’s busy on tour again with The Rolling Stones. He’s responsible for that heavy, consistent back-beat you hear on dozens of your favorite songs. Plus, this guy’s drums are always tuned to perfection!
Buddy Rich
We can’t talk about classic, American drumming without mentioning the Brooklyn-born Bernard “Buddy” Rich. Although it’s been years since he’s graced any stage or recording, the memory of his fast, chop-filled drumming still remains. Few media sources discuss or remember the greats, especially in a small niche like drumming. However, let’s take this independence day to listen back to Buddy’s top moments, like this crazy solo from 1970.
American drummers continue to lead the charge, inventing new rythmns, mixing different genres, and keeping the best music alive. Let’s all celebrate the 4th of July today by cranking up our favorite music and listening closely to what the drums are playing.
