Chris Vrenna, the Grammy-winning former drummer for Nine Inch Nails (NIN), is stepping into a new role this fall—this time in front of a classroom full of students at the University of Michigan. Known for his powerful rhythms that electrified rock fans worldwide, Vrenna is now set to bring his extensive music industry experience to the academic world as an assistant professor in the Department of Performing Arts Technology within the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Vrenna’s journey to this esteemed position is as dynamic as his drumming career. Growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania, Vrenna began playing drums at the tender age of six. With the encouragement of his father, who would drive him to gigs as a middle schooler playing in punk bands, Vrenna’s passion for music was evident early on. His big break came while he was a student at Kent State University, when his friend Trent Reznor invited him to join the Exotic Birds, and later, the groundbreaking industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails.
Vrenna’s tenure with Nine Inch Nails, spanning from 1989 to 1996, saw him contributing to iconic tracks such as “March of the Pigs” from the 1994 album The Downward Spiral. This track, known for its challenging 29/8 time signature, remains one of NIN’s most recognized songs. Vrenna’s influence extended beyond drumming, as he also ventured into music production, working with a variety of artists, including U2, Metallica, and Marilyn Manson. His expertise even reached the video game industry, where he composed for popular series like Doom and Quake.
Despite his success in the music world, Vrenna always harbored a deep connection to academia. After several teaching stints at institutions like Wisconsin’s Madison Media Institute and Athens State University in Alabama, he’s finally landed his “dream job” at the University of Michigan. This new chapter allows him to combine his love for music technology with his passion for teaching.
For Chris Vrenna, joining the University of Michigan is not just a professional milestone but a personal homecoming. Raised as a Wolverine fan, with fond memories of watching Michigan-Ohio State games with his father, Vrenna is thrilled to wear the Maize and Blue proudly as he embarks on this next journey.
Vrenna’s story is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, whether it’s on the world’s biggest stages or in a college classroom.
