Homewood High School Patriot band’s drummer,Jack Mitchell performed an entire drum line while spinning in a brightly lit, neon gyroscope.

A TikTok video of Jack Mitchell spinning in the gyroscope while playing along with his bandmates and not missing a single beat has garnered 1.9 million views and 300 thousand likes since it was posted a few days ago. The video was also shared on Instagram and the drummer received rave reviews.
“Last year, about September or October I think, Mr. Cooper, our band director, walked into class one day with a big smile on his face,” Mitchell told ABC News. “He said, ‘Guys, there’s this guy in Mississippi who owns this spinning gyro thing and I bought it.’” The Patriots band is amazing, but drummer Jack Mitchell definitely steals the show. He performs with his quad drum in a gyroscope. Seeing is believing. He said when the band director brought in the gyro, it was meant to be.
Homewood isn’t the first school to use a gyro. But video of the show went viral.
A pep rally showcased that Jake Mitchell has a lot of energy when he’s drumming. He said he just tries to put on a good show.
“Homewood leans very much in showmanship. We pride ourselves on putting on the best show we can possibly do. And that means me hyping out my personality before the show. So I get out there, and I’m like, you know, it’s all about playing up the personality, you know, getting the people out in the field hyped because that’s for the whole band,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell told ABC News that putting the drum kit into the gyroscope was not an easy task. Mr. Cooper got a group of mechanics to work on the project.
With hard work and dedication, the pieces finally fell into place. Jake Mitchell candidly told ABC that he had only spun on the gyroscope twice before performing at the big game.
“So I was not sure what to expect. I didn’t know if it was gonna roll off somewhere. They’d done so much work on it. I wasn’t sure if it was safe, but I’m still here. It looked pretty cool, so I guess they did a good job. “The drums are all in front of you,” Mitchell said. “If you focus on the drums in front of you and focus completely on looking at nothing else, you can kind of get through it. If you start looking around, you get dizzy fast. So it’s almost like an art form you know.”
With 375 members, the Homewood High School band has done many courageous performances, but nothing like this.”
Previously, the band has performed at nine Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parades, and five Tournament of Roses Parades and marched in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland. In November, the band will march to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
