Two-time Grammy nominee Jason Bittner, a seasoned drummer hailing from Niskayuna, New York, has built an illustrious career playing with some of the most iconic bands in the metal genre. Bittner’s musical journey is marked by his impressive ability to adapt and excel in different styles of metal, ranging from hardcore to thrash. After spending years playing with bands like Overkill and Shadows Fall, Bittner is now focused on his supergroup, Category 7, which he describes as a creative outlet where he can fully unleash his drumming potential.

Category 7, which Bittner formed with guitarists Mike Orlando and Phil Demmel, is a culmination of the drummer’s extensive experience and passion for the genre. The group’s debut album, released last month, has been met with critical acclaim, particularly for Bittner’s dynamic drumming. “Playing with Category 7 has allowed me to play to the top of my ability,” Bittner says. “It’s a no-holds-barred approach, and I’ve been able to push my limits in ways I haven’t before.” His enthusiasm for the band is evident, as he considers this project to be one of his proudest achievements, rivaling his work with Shadows Fall.

Reflecting on his journey, Bittner credits his success to his relentless work ethic and his love for drumming. Even in his 50s, he maintains a rigorous practice schedule, working on music from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. His dedication to his craft is also evident in his physical stamina; even though he sits on a drum throne, in a typical 90-minute set, Bittner burns nearly 1,100 calories, a testament to the intensity and physicality required to perform at his level.

Despite the challenges and changes in the music industry, Bittner remains grateful for the opportunities he’s had and the friendships he’s made along the way. His relationship with the late Neil Peart, drummer for Rush, stands out as one of the highlights of his career. “He was the greatest drummer ever, and he was my friend,” Bittner reflects, emphasizing that the connections he’s made are just as important as the accolades he’s received.

As Jason Bittner continues to forge ahead with Category 7, he does so with a sense of fulfillment and a clear focus on the future. His journey is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and the endless possibilities that come with fully embracing one’s craft.
