Dale Crover, the versatile drummer known for his work with the Melvins, has announced the upcoming release of his third full-length solo album, “Glossolalia,” set to drop on September 13 via Joyful Noise Recordings. This highly anticipated album features an array of high-profile guest musicians, including Tom Waits, Ty Segall, Kim Thayil, and more. In advance of the album’s release, Crover has shared a second track from the 11-song collection titled “I Quit,” which features a notable guitar contribution from Kim Thayil, the guitarist from Soundgarden.

The track “I Quit” stands out not only for its brooding intensity but also for its unique musical composition. Crover offers an insightful look into the song’s creation, explaining that it revolves around the theme of control and the struggle of thinking one is always right. The song is set in a distinctive tuning that Crover refers to as “Lazy Keith Richards,” where only the A string is tuned to G. This unconventional tuning gives the track its unique sound, further enriched by Thayil’s guitar solo, which follows the second chorus.
“Glossolalia” represents Crover’s most focused and ambitious statement as a solo artist. The album showcases his ability to blend his signature drumming style with diverse musical influences, resulting in a record that stands as a testament to his artistic evolution. Amid the eclectic contributions from guest artists like Waits and Segall, what truly shines through is Crover’s sturdy vision and coherent aesthetic. This is particularly evident in “I Quit,” where his thunderous drumming complements Thayil’s sharp guitar work, creating a powerful and engaging musical experience.
In a recent interview, Crover reflected on the process of creating “Glossolalia,” describing it as a journey of growth and exploration. He mentioned that working with such a diverse group of musicians allowed him to push the boundaries of his musical style, resulting in an album that is both innovative and deeply personal. The collaborations on the album are not merely for show; they are integral to the album’s identity, each artist bringing their unique flavor to the project.
Fans of Crover and the Melvins can expect “Glossolalia” to be a significant milestone in his solo career, offering a fresh perspective on his musical abilities. The album is available for pre-order in multiple formats, including Hot Pink vinyl, CD, and a VIP “Lickety Split Pink” Vinyl, limited to 400 hand-numbered copies with a bonus flexi-disc.
