Metallica has made a $40,000 donation through the band’s All Within My Hands Foundation to People Serving People, Minnesota’s largest organization that provides services for people and families experiencing homelessness.

The non-profit took to Instagram and announced
“Metallica just invested $40,000 through their All Within My Hands Foundation to People Serving People when they visited Minneapolis. Gifts like this make programs like financial literacy, emergency assistance, and high-quality childcare possible at People Serving People. Thank you, Metallica, for fueling our work, firing up our community, and helping the families at our shelter achieve their desires!”
Murphy said this donation will get them closer to reaching their goal of raising $1.2 million before the end of this year. He believes the band’s donation could inspire other people locally to help out the nonprofit.
“We’re really grateful for Metallica for doing that and the attention that it is providing.”
Metallica, one of the biggest-selling bands in American history, began on October 28, 1981, when drummer Lars Ulrich and guitar player and singer James Hetfield got together via Ulrich’s LA Recycler newspaper ad. Soon, the two had recruited Hetfield’s friend and housemate Ron McGovney to play bass, Dave Mustaine to play lead guitar, and taken the name Metallica after a suggestion from Bay Area metal scene friend Ron Quintana.
Metallica’s drummer Lars Ulrich had revealed earlier that the band had kept their charitable work “under the wraps” for years due to “cynicism” surrounding other celebrities’ motivations in the field. The thrash icons began publicizing their food bank activities during tours supporting their 2016 album Hardwired… To Self-Destruct. Lars further recounted:
“So for many years, Metallica gave back almost 100 percent under the radar. In cities we would play, we would work closely with food banks and not only make sure that the massive amounts of uneaten meals from the backstage catering and dressing rooms would end up in the hands of the needy but also support these local charities with donations.”
Talking about the band’s decision to go public and launch their All Within My Hands Foundation, Ulrich said, “Maybe advanced age erodes the cynicism? Maybe the possibilities of reaching people in today’s social-media climate seemed too good to suppress. Whatever the reason, there was a natural, effortless transition to not only feeling comfortable with talking about our efforts but being ready to shout them out loud and proud from every rooftop and every soapbox possible.
All Within My Hands was established in 2017 by METALLICA to give back to the people and places that have supported the band.
The Foundation aims to support and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band for years, as well as encourage participation from fans and friends. All funds raised will be donated to a multitude of national and local charities. Every penny from your donations will go directly to our charity partners.
It also allows METALLICA’s fans to engage in philanthropy and volunteerism. The Foundation is dedicated to creating sustainable communities through education, the fight against hunger, and other critical local services. All expenses of the Foundation are covered by the band, the board, and a few special friends so that 100 percent of donations go to the organizations it supports. AWMH is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
The METALLICA family and the All Within My Hands Foundation board members are committed to running an organization of the highest integrity and transparency where expenses are kept to a minimum.
