Finland’s progressive metal band Simulacrum has announced significant changes to their lineup ahead of their highly anticipated fourth album. Following the release of their previous album, Genesis, which garnered worldwide praise, the band faced unforeseen challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The shutdown of venues and subsequent hit to band chemistry led to a period of reflection and ultimately, a decision to make some difficult changes.

In a heartfelt statement, the band shared that they had parted ways with drummer Tatu Turunen, guitarist Antti Karhumaa, and vocalists Niklas Broman and Erik Kraemer. The decision was not made lightly, as these members had become best friends over the years. However, personal commitments and diverging motivations led to the amicable departure of these long-standing members. Tatu decided to take a break from drumming, Antti became engrossed in various musical projects and teaching, Erik focused on his own musical endeavors, and Niklas prioritized his family and medical career.
Despite these changes, Simulacrum remains optimistic about the future, emphasizing their commitment to delivering top-tier vintage prog metal at a time when the genre’s releases are becoming increasingly rare. The band expressed deep gratitude to their former members for their contributions, which helped shape Simulacrum into the band it is today. The statement left the door open for potential collaborations in the future, hinting that fans might still hear these musicians on upcoming recordings.
The band has introduced Matias Rokio as their new drummer, a decision that has already begun to pay off. Matias, who has been passionate about metal since childhood, impressed the band with his attitude, skill, and enthusiasm for the genre. With over 15 years of drumming experience and a deep love for metal icons like Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Pantera, Matias brings a fresh energy to Simulacrum. He expressed his excitement about joining the band and contributing to their technical and modern metal style.
Looking ahead, Simulacrum plans to reveal their new singer and guitarist in September, promising that these additions are well-known personas in the metal scene. The band has also been working on new material, which they describe as sounding fantastic. Fans are encouraged to stay tuned for more updates as the band gears up for the release of their fourth album.
In the meantime, Matias’s drumming can be heard on two tracks from the Genesis album, which have been released as a video showcasing his talent. This lineup change marks a new chapter for Simulacrum, one that promises to deliver the same high-quality metal music that fans have come to expect.
