When reflecting on Quasi’s three-decade career, it’s impressive how the band has weathered various challenges, particularly through the steadfast partnership of Janet Weiss and Sam Coomes. Known for her versatile roles in bands like Sleater-Kinney and Wild Flag, Weiss faced a major setback in 2019 due to a severe car accident that left her with broken legs and a collarbone. The incident cast doubt on her ability to drum again, a possibility she refused to accept.

Determined to recover, Weiss dedicated herself to intensive practice, with Coomes supporting her every step of the way. This determination led to the creation of their latest album, “Breaking the Balls of History,” recorded during the pandemic and released in February 2023. The album, produced with John Goodmanson, marks Quasi’s first release in a decade and showcases the duo’s resilience and innovative spirit.

The album’s formation was organic, stemming from a series of rehearsals in their compact practice space in Portland. Weiss’s recovery and the duo’s creative synergy are evident in the album’s raw, direct sound, capturing their live energy. The record was released under Sub Pop Records, leveraging Weiss’s longstanding rapport with the label from her days with Sleater-Kinney.

Weiss’s journey back to drumming wasn’t just physical but emotional and mental as well. She recalled the uncertainty of whether her “kick drum leg” would work, making the process challenging yet rewarding. Her successful return is a testament to her strength and the duo’s commitment to their music.

As Quasi continues to tour, with a big show coming up in San Diego on July 25th, 2024, Weiss aims to connect with fans and share the joy of live performances, blending old favorites with new tracks. Her story inspires not only drummers but all musicians facing similar challenges, underscoring the importance of perseverance and passion in the face of adversity.
