Simon Kirke, the iconic drummer renowned for his work with legendary rock bands Bad Company and Free, just wrapped up the Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp in New York. With a career spanning over five decades, Kirke’s participation in the camp offered musicians a unique opportunity to learn from one of rock’s enduring figures.

Kirke’s journey with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp began several years ago during a tour with Ringo Starr. The promoter, who also managed the camp, invited Kirke to consider teaching.

“It was a chance to give something back to the fans and people who follow me and my bands over the years”

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp, which ran from July 18th to July 21st, was designed for music lovers of all ages and skill levels. Participants got to interact and learn from their musical heroes, creating an immersive and unforgettable experience. For Kirke, teaching at the camp is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s also a learning experience for himself. “I learn a lot by teaching,” he explained, emphasizing that sharing his expertise helps him refine his own skills.

In addition to Kirke, the camp featured prominent musicians like Lou Gramm from Foreigner, and Rick Nielsen and Daxx Nielsen from Cheap Trick, who served as counselors. This impressive lineup ensures that campers receive a well-rounded and inspiring education in rock music.

Kirke’s involvement in previous camps has been well-received, and he’s excited to continue contributing. He reflected on how the camp benefits both fans and musicians alike. “When you get a chance to hang out with your ‘heroes,’ it’s wonderful. And once you put all that sort of aside, you want to learn from them,” he said, highlighting the mutual respect and admiration that characterizes the camp’s atmosphere.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy Camp event was an exceptional gathering for rock enthusiasts. By offering fans a chance to learn directly from seasoned musicians, the camp continues to foster a deeper appreciation for the craft of drumming and rock music.
